What is murder?

Many have questioned my position on the decriminalization of abortion. Everyone uses the “You shall not murder” commandment when debating the subject. It seems to me, that the mistake lies in truly understanding the meaning of the word “murder”.

Among the many definitions found in Webster’s Dictionary for this verb, one is: to deprive of live; destroy. It also states: to cause extreme pain to, to consume, to defeat. It becomes apparent through its definition that murder isn’t simply the act of taking someone’s life. It’s actually any act that prevents someone from having a life of quality, dignity and happiness.

Giving birth to a new life doesn’t mean allowing an unwanted child to come into this world, into a dysfunctional family that’s unable to offer it a decent life and because of that, it ends up exposed to violence, abuse, loss of self esteem and other afflictions. That’s actually condemning it to death; a social and psychological death that will eventually lead to the worst of all deaths: SPIRITUAL DEATH.

Children that are left to wander the streets and decide their own fate were never given a fair chance at life. They were thrown into the world as a result of the recklessness and irresponsibility of unprepared adults. Many of them will just repeat the same cycle of neglect and omission that they’ve fallen victim to.

These children were first hated by their parents and then go on to be hated by society. The same society, who raises the pro-life flag, then turns their head in disgust and crosses the street to get around the homeless boy lying on the floor, reeking of feces and urine. That’s called hypocrisy.

Those who like to point fingers at sins, need to understand that the error isn’t in the interruption of an unwanted pregnancy, but in the trivialization of sex, the numerous and misleading factors that lead a couple to have intercourse and having a child with the same lack of commitment they have in their own life.

We’re not apologizing for abortions, we are saying “no” to hypocrisy. Women haven’t stopped having abortions because it’s an illegal act. The main reason for deciding to terminate a pregnancy is that it was unwanted to begin with, caused by reasons ranging from a crazy night of partying to sexual assault. Whenever the decision of having an abortion is made, it will be carried out regardless if it’s legal or not. They’re performed in clandestine clinics, which many times also lead to the woman’s death, injury or side effects because by poorly performed procedures.

The legalization of abortions would allow these women to receive proper medical treatment and not put their lives at risk. That’s being pro-life.

The legalization of abortions would prevent innocent children from coming into the world to suffer and have miserable lives.

Legalizing abortions would prevent clandestine surgical procedures.

A woman who wants to terminate a pregnancy, whatever her reason may be, is not a criminal. She’s a human being in distress, who must be accepted, loved, guided and not condemned. This is the role the UCKG chooses to take as a Church.

To all those who think that they’re pleasing God by looking down on these women with hatred and intolerance, here’s what His word says: “Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him”. I John 3:15
