The Story of Gideon – Part 16

The battle approaches

The battle approaches: (Judges 7:19-22)

At midnight, Gideon approaches the camp with a hundred men whilst the other two hundred, divided into two other companies of a hundred each, wait for the signal. When Gideon blows the trumpet and breaks the pitcher, everyone else does the same. They shout and the entire enemy army starts to run and flee.

Suddenly, all the fears of the Midianites materialise before their eyes. They do not see Gideon and the three hundred; they see only what their fear allowed them to see: the great army of an invincible hero who had defied Baal and has been commissioned by God to bring victory to Israel.

The certainty of defeat within them was such that the outcome could not be any different. Also, the disparity here is glaringly obvious between the new spirit of Gideon, now fearless and therefore able to make the right decisions, and the spirit of the Midianites, who were terrified and making wrong choices. It is a glimpse of the disaster that would have happened if God had not removed the timid and the fearful from the army of Israel.

Continues tomorrow…

Don’t miss it!
