How long?

From the time David was a young boy, he was always portrayed as a great hero.

During his time as a pastor, he faced a bear and a lion, in order to protect his sheep. With that same faith, he faced Goliath and saved Israel from the Philistines.

But his faith wasn’t limited to triumphs.

His devotional side eased the pain of King Saul’s depression.

David was respected as a man because of his faith, courage, determination and leadership.

But it hadn’t always been this way. Much of his life had been spent among animals. His trips were fueled with fear of death and doubts, causing his soul to become extremely bitter.

No authors were ever able to put David’s personal torments into words. We can catch glimpses of him trying to express it in some Psalms.

For example, in Psalm 13, he showed just how anxious he was while waiting for a Divine answer, to the point he thought God had forgot about him.

How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever?

Isn’t that what often happens to the faithful?

How long will You hide your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily?

“How long must we wait for a Divine answer?” – we also ask.

How long will my enemy be exalted over me?

The four consecutive times he says, “How long”, show how his suffering has reached a peak.

It’s a fact, Christian life isn’t ever going to be a bed of roses. Much on the contrary, there will be many thorns along the way. But it’s the only path that guarantees access to the narrow gate.

Before the end of this prayer, David received an answer. So much so, that he ends this Psalm with praise:

But I have trusted in Your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me.” Psalm 13:5-6
