Doing a lot and giving little. Doing little and giving a lot.
How does a husband react when he knows his wife’s food could taste better? …or puts on a shirt, notices it is wrinkled, and knows his wife could have done a better job?
His wife reacts the same way when she notices her husband does something with a lackadaisical attitude. Husband and wife are lackadaisical towards each other but give their best to something else.
A wife might have done a lot around the house, but did not do her best when it came to her husband. A husband might have done a lot on his job, but what he did for his wife he did it in any old way.
How often do we tell people that whatever they do—at home or work—is an offering? We argue that they demand the best, but give terrible offerings. They arrive late, miss work, badmouth their boss, and don’t give their best on their job, and yet want a raise.
When it comes to us, it cannot be any different. We are not entrepreneurs or employees of the Church—we do not work for a salary, we are men of God. The life of a husband or wife, employer or employee is an offering, just like our lives. They use this offering for something materialistic; we use this offering to undo the works of the devil. And I don’t think his work can be undone with leftovers. Our Lord did not place leftovers on the cross—He gave His all.
So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury;for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.” Mark 12.43-44
To everyone’s eyes the rich were doing a lot… and yet it lacked quality, it was leftovers. They kept the best for themselves. Each of us needs to identify who we are giving our best to. When I say the best, I’m speaking about everything—our all, so that there are no leftovers. The widow gave a small amount in the eyes of those men, but it was a lot in the eyes of God, because she had nothing left over.
