“Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37.4

As I thought about how to delight myself in the LORD, many ideas about how to do this came to mind.

I was not concerned about satisfying my heart.

I wanted to repay Him for my salvation.

I thought of making more praise and worship meetings.

But my soul called out for something more.

I was intrigued as to why the psalmists encouraged this.

I persisted in searching for an answer.

Again. Another thought.

What if I increased the number of meetings of reading, meditating on and studying the Bible?

At this point, my soul cried out: Wait a minute! Do you want to lock me away in a monastery? Do you want to savor honey from the Rock all by yourself?

My soul immediately leaped for joy at that perspective.

You see, when my soul was trapped and starving in the clutches of hell, praise and worship, Bible studies, and so on did not have the power to free it.

I needed to remove the bad spirit that enslaved it.

Then I realized that delighting myself in the Lord meant going down to the captives, breaking their shackles and freeing them.

Wasn’t this the work the Holy Spirit did in Jesus?

…and isn’t this the Holy Spirit’s will for us?

“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor, He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.” Isaiah 61.1
