Flame of Fire
Waking up earlier than usual today, helped me take the time to read the Word of God before my day began… what a privilege!
If only people knew how deep and uplifting His Words are. They’re often compared to living waters. Can you imagine drinking from living waters? I can.
I imagine myself in a splendid and very distant forest, filled with the most exquisite plants, flowers, and trees. In the midst of this forest, there’s the most beautiful waterfall, few people ever reach it because the path is not so smooth. You need to focus on the water sound in order to know which way to proceed. People try going there every day, but most of them give up.
But I’ve learned the secret of finding it, I learned to meditate.
In Psalm 104, you read about God’s greatness and how all of His marvelous creation is but a small drop of water in a bucket for Him.
There’s a passage, however, that made me stop and think:
“…Who makes His angels spirits, His ministers a flame of fire.” v.4
God’s angels are spirits already, why is the Psalmist here saying He makes them spirits?
Psalm 104:4 talks about God making His angels spirits and His ministers like a flame of fire. If God’s angels are spirit already, then the Psalmist is talking about another kind of angel… those who were not spirits… those who were made “a little lower than the angels” (Hebrews 2:7), that is us. But not all of us though. Not every human being or even every Christian has received this divine benefit. Thus it’s so hard to see people use their faith.
When you’re spirit, you see beyond what your eyes see. You have an indescribable strength; the kind people can’t really understand… a bit inhuman even. How can a mother not worry about a son who’s going downhill? The one who’s spirit can. How can a lonely woman in her thirties not worry about her love life? The one who’s spirit can.
When you’re spirit, you have a sixth sense, as my brother-in-law likes to put it. You’re not limited by your five usual senses anymore. You may hear or see things and yet, still keep your faith in what you cannot hear or see.
So who gets to be spirit then?
Those who are baptized with God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit. When this amazing miracle happens, you become God’s witness to this world. You have what it takes to share Him with others.
As the Psalm above says, you become like a flame of fire. Notice that it’s not saying ‘flames of fire’ – it’s not plural… how odd is that? Everyone who has God’s Spirit becomes a flame, that is, one with Him.
He’s the fire and we’re His flame.
