LOOK WHERE JESUS PLACED HIMSELF FOR YOU

Few people notice a decisive detail in the event in Gethsemane, when Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss. In the Gospel of John 18, we see Jesus with the eleven disciples while Judas returns with an armed troop. The text says:
“Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.” (John 18:3)
Judas knew Jesus was not violent, but it still took an entire troop to arrest Him.
“I am He”: the statement that brought down soldiers
Jesus knew everything that was about to happen. He took a step forward, stood between the disciples and the soldiers and asked: “Who are you seeking?” When they answered “Jesus of Nazareth”, He said: “I am He”. The strength of this declaration was so great that the soldiers retreated and fell to the ground.
The expression “I Am He” refers to the I Am that revealed itself to Moses in Sinai. There, Jesus made it clear who He is: the embodied God Himself. And this word was enough to show that He would only be arrested because He chose to surrender.
Jesus protects the disciples
After the soldiers fell and got up, Jesus insisted:
“I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way.” (John 18:4–9)
Here is the detail: Jesus not only gave Himself, but interceded for the disciples, demanding that no one touch them. He took for Himself all the responsibility, all the scolding, all the risk. Even when Peter cut the soldier’s ear, no disciple was arrested.
Jesus was a substitute, shield, defender. He attracted evil to Himself to protect His own.
Jesus keeps putting Himself between you and evil
This scene in Gethsemane symbolises what Jesus does daily for those who are His. He puts Himself between you and evil, between you and the “Judas”, between you and the forces of darkness. He repeats the same gesture: “The problem is with me. These here behind Me, let them go.”
Therefore, it is strange to see people who, out of ignorance or convenience, put third parties between them and God. They look for pastors, gurus, images, lucky charms (…), as if they needed mediators.
Why look for mediators if God Himself stands in your way?
If Jesus faces evil for you, why put between you and God an object that breaks, rusts or falls apart in the rain? Why give creatures the place that belongs only to the Creator?
Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)
Therefore, there is no other mediator. It is not a pastor, bishop, church, saint, stone, metal, crystal, clothing colour or any human invention. It’s Jesus: only Jesus.
