YOU SAID: "NEVER AGAIN" Yeah, right...

Between promises and actions: the danger of living a faith only of words.

True faith is not only revealed in what we say, but mainly in what we do. Many people know how to say what is right, what God wants to hear and even what others expect to hear. However, when it comes time to act, practice reveals something different.

This distance between speaking and doing is more common than it seems.

Promises made under pressure

In Jeremiah 2:20, God exposes this behaviour of the people of Israel:

“For of old I have broken your yoke and burst your bonds; And you said, ‘I will not transgress’.”

That is, when God freed them from difficulties and broke the yoke of oppression, the people promised that they would never make mistakes again. In the impulse of gratitude or emotion, they claimed that they would be faithful.

However, a short time later, they returned to the same mistakes.

This also happens today. When someone is confronted by a mistake, they quickly ask for forgiveness and promise to change. He often even cries and swears to give weight to his words. However, after the moment of pressure, they repeat the same behaviour.

What Jesus taught

Therefore, Jesus taught something simple: a Christian does not need to swear. The “yes” should be yes, and the “no” should be no. When words need a lot of promises, it’s usually because they’ve already lost their weight.

In addition, it is important to understand that tears do not always mean repentance. Many people are saddened by having been discovered, but not by having made a mistake.

True repentance appears in the change of attitude.

Divided faith

God also compared Israel’s behaviour to spiritual infidelity. The people said they believed in Him, but at the same time, they sought other gods.

Today, we see something similar when someone claims to believe in God, but also places their trust in superstition, amulets or other beliefs.

It’s a divided faith – and God doesn’t accept division.

Examine your will

Basically, the problem is not in the words, but in the will. Many people say what they know is right, but want to live in their own way.

The truth is that no one can deceive God.

Therefore, it is worth reflecting: is there coherence between what you say and what you do?

We can deceive people…
But no one fools God.
