Words that hurt
Thinking before you speak is a rare ability. Few have it and just the same they forget to use it sometimes. Why do we speak without thinking of the consequences?
Because we’re frustrated about something. Because we feel angry. Because we want to fill the void. Because we want to be funny. Because we want to call attention. Because we want to have a come back. Because we want to get a reaction out of someone. Because we’re bad at communicating. Because we’re actually selfish.
Selfish and sometimes weak before our emotions. That’s when intelligence takes wisdom by the hand and goes for a walk.
What can you do to avoid speaking without thinking?
Think more about others, less about yourself, and practice self-control over your emotions.
On the other hand, what can you do when others say words that hurt you?
Curiously, the same solution applies: think less about yourself, more about the other person, and control your emotions.
Instead of letting those words hurt you, focus on the other person and try to understand why they said that. Understand her. Cut her some slack in her moment of weakness. Try to understand what she really meant to say, though she failed in choosing the right words. Focus on that.
It’s wise to think before you speak. It’s intelligent to know how to react when someone speaks without thinking.
