WALK, STAND AND SIT: WHY CAN'T YOU BE HAPPY? (Psalm 1)

Walking, standing and sitting may seem like simple actions, but spiritually, they represent a perilous process that can distance you from God without you realising it.

Days ago, we meditated on Psalm 1 and talked about three very strong words: counsel, path and seat. Now, I want you to notice three other hidden movements in this same verse: walk, stand and sit. These three verbs reveal a subtle but dangerous process—the progression that leads a person to spiritual unhappiness.

First step: walk in the counsel of the ungodly

Walking is acting without thinking. It’s an automatic movement.

This happens to those who walk in the counsel of the ungodly—follow what the world says, repeat what it hears and incorporate wrong ideas without even realising it.

Today, for example, many people prepare for celebrations and customs that exalt evil without reflecting on what lies behind them. It seems harmless, but it is already a sign that the person is walking in accordance with the counsel of the ungodly—they absorb what is contrary to God as if it were normal.

And the danger is right there: the wicked does not always look like an evildoer. Sometimes, it is someone admired, respected and followed on social media. They give advice, speak with confidence, influence behaviours – and, without realising it, a Christian begins to walk the same path as these people who have nothing of God.

Second step: stand in the path of sinners

After a person walks, they stop to stand. To stop is to stand and observe. That’s when you start looking at the lives of sinners and, out of curiosity or comparison, begin to consider their style.

It is like a young woman who, raised with good principles, begins to admire popular colleagues who dress and act in ways contrary to what she has been taught. She looks, observes and thinks: “Maybe I’m being left out”. That’s it – she’s already standing.

When someone stops on the path of sin, they are already making room for influence. They haven’t fallen yet, but they’re flirting with the mistake. And this is the beginning of the fall.

Third step: sit on the seat of the scornful

This is the endpoint of this progression.

Those who sit in the seat of the scornful have already become part of the group. It went from observation to participation. Now, share the same ideas, the same jokes, the same attitudes.

Mockers mock faith, criticise those who live in truth and think they are superior. And, in order not to be ridiculed, many people prefer to join them. But when they do this, they seal their own unhappiness.

Attention to your movement

Realise where you are.

• Have you just been walking in the counsel of the ungodly without realising it?
• Have you been watching sin with curiosity?
• Or are you already sitting on the seat of the scornful, finding normal what used to bother you?

God warns through Psalm 1 because He wants to preserve us. He shows that unhappiness does not come suddenly—it is built, step by step, as the person moves away from His presence.

So wake up while there’s time. Get out of the wrong seat, get up from the path of sin and walk with God again.

True happiness is in following the counsel of the Most High, not those of the world.

The secret of true happiness is in Psalm 1.
