THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS | PART 1: THE DOUBT

Find out how Jesus faced temptation and resisted the doubt that comes to all of us.

After being baptised in the waters, Jesus heard, along with all those present, a single and powerful voice that confirmed: This is My Beloved Son! However, 40 days later, in the desert, the devil tried to make Him doubt this truth three times.

“When He had been baptised, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:16,17

Soon after baptism, the Bible says that Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit to the desert to be tempted by the devil.

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” Matthew 4:1-3

See that the devil waited for Jesus to be very hungry to tempt Him. God had already said that Jesus was His beloved Son, and if God spoke, that is it; no one can change that, but the devil makes the person question (doubt)…

He tried to make Jesus doubt that He was, in fact, the Son of God. Thus, to this day, he casts doubt on people, making them think that they are incapable and that God will not listen to them. Why? If a person accepts the doubt, they begin to destroy themselves.

You must be very careful because the devil is the father of doubts. In the same way, God works with faith, which is the certainty of the fulfilment of the Word of God; the devil works with doubt.

Thus, Jesus fought doubt (temptation) using the Word, as we can read in Matthew 4:4:

“But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

Jesus beat the devil three times, saying, “It’s written”. With only three verses, He beat the accuser in that situation. This is the power of the Word. After Jesus said the third “it’s written”, Satan left Him.

“Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.” Matthew 4:11

At that moment, Jesus was setting an example of how we have to overcome the temptations that come our way.
