The story you tell yourself

A way that we make sense of things is from hearing and telling stories. We get a better understanding of the world around us, people, things, events, and even ourselves, all through stories. The stories parents tell, bosses tell, your spouse tell to explain their love, and the stories God himself tells to teach us.  All of them bring us a better understanding in an easier way.

Stories are instruments of communication, but much more than this. They carry feelings, emotions, faith, facts, illusions, motivation, and many other things—it all depends on the type of story.

But some of the most important stories are the ones you tell yourself. When you look to an interesting book and in your mind you tell yourself, “you don’t like to read.” You’re telling yourself a little bit about your story. “Reading is not your thing, it never was, not even in school. You don’t like to read.” And this short story defines who you are, and what you’re going to do in regards to this book.
On instant, you’ll put down the book and not give it another thought, so that you don’t go against your story. That story then gains strength to live on.

By now, I’m sure you have perceived, reading between the lines, that the stories you tell yourself are very powerful. They define your character and behavior. Consequently, they define your life.

So, the secret is to decide what’s your story. After all, something so powerful shouldn’t be left to chance or at the mercy of your fears, complexes or the prejudices you’ve created about yourself.

If you want to be a successful person, you have to start to tell yourself your success story. “You are a person that does not accept failure, only success.” “You were born to overcome.” “God wants you to be successful.” — and so on.

The stories you tell yourself about yourself will define your future.

What type of future do you want? Start to create it now, use stories about yourself that will move you to get to where you want to be.

“I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great…”
God, changing Abraham’s story way before it actually happened. Genesis 12:2

Write below a new story that you will tell yourself from now on.
