The power of doing something every day

The New Year is at the door. Plans, dreams, and wishes abound this time of year. Exactly like a year ago. Did you reach the ones for 2013? Stop and think for a bit. If you continue doing what you always did, you will have what you’ve always had.

Great plans and goals are very important. If you don’t know where you want to reach, you’ll never know if you got there and so anywhere you are will be good enough. We have to have a goal.

“Start my own business, so I don’t have to work for anyone.”

“Buy a new house in a better part of town where we’ll be more comfortable and secure.”

“Lose 20 pounds, be healthier and not live a sedentary life style.”

“Be at peace with God and myself through an active spiritual life.”

Whatever your goal may be, one thing is certain: you have to do more than taking a step to reach it. It won’t happen today, all at once, in the snap of a finger. That’s where a lot of people stumble. They get discouraged because their dreams appear to be too far away.

There is, however, a trick to beat this. It’s the power to do something every day.

If you want to make a dream come true, you have to do something about it every day. Because no matter how small the step may be, that’s how you’re going to get there. One step at a time, the tortoise beat the hare. It’s no different in real life.

Without losing sight of your dream in the distance, do something about it today, and the next day do it again. It could be just ten minutes you take out of your day, half an hour or an hour. It’s not important how much time you’re going to spend daily, but it’s the fact that you do something every day. That’s where the power lies; in the habitual regularity, in the sum of the parts.

Do you want to have your own business in a year? What can you do about it today? Research further into the desired industry? Speak to someone who’s been in the business for a long time? Open an account to start saving and accumulate capital?

Do you want to be 20 pounds lighter and healthier in six months? What can you do about it today? Skip dessert? Go up the stairs instead of taking the elevator? Make an appointment with a nutritionist?

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, Jesus taught them the Lord’s Prayer. Embedded in this prayer is a secret few know: “Give us this day our daily bread.”

  • Our daily bread: that which we need
  • Daily: we have to seek what we need daily; no use looking just today for what we need for the entire week
  • Give us this day: indicates that this prayer needs to be made at the beginning of the day, when “today” is still ahead of us

That’s the power of doings something every day. Was not the Lord’s Prayer given to us so that we repeat it every day. It serves as a guide to how we should make our daily prayers. I am living testimony of this power. Ever since I started doing this, my spiritual life has reached another level.

You can decide right there, right now, what you’re going to do every day that will bring you closer to your objectives.

  1. Think and clearly define where you want to go
  2. Decide to do something daily in favor of your goal
  3. Do it. No excuses. No exceptions.

No exceptions.

PS. Here’s a tip to those who are really determined to reach their dream: keep a diary, calendar or any other way of reminding you to do what you need to do and what you did that day. The pleasure of reaching the end of each day and writing what you did is like no other. Try it.
