THE HARDEST PRAYER IN THE BIBLE

The prayer made by the Lord Jesus in Gethsemane reveals the greatest war that exists: our will against God's will.

Do you know what the hardest prayer in the Bible is? It is the one that the Lord Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane, when he told the Father not to do His will, but God’s. This prayer is the hardest because it was also hard for Jesus, who endured it in the midst of the greatest agony of His soul. He overcame that infernal pressure precisely because he truly surrendered to the will of the Father.

“He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” Matthew 26:39

When our will is confused with God’s will

When we look back on our lives, we often realise, in retrospect, how many times we followed our own will, believing it was God’s. We made decisions convinced that we were right, but then we faced consequences that revealed the opposite: it was not divine inspiration, but rather our flesh. That’s why saying “not as I will, but as You will” is so hard. How to give up what we want when we believe that’s the best for us? This is a daily fight.

The Bible says, in 1 Peter 2:11, that we must abstain from fleshly lust because they fight against our souls.

“Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul” 1 Peter 2:11

That is, our own will wars against us. There is a constant inner struggle, and many are unaware of it. Are you aware of it? Do you realise that you are the target of an ancient spiritual war between God and the devil? Is your soul the prize of this fight? And that who decides the result is not God or the devil, but you?

The incalculable value of the soul

Your soul is so precious that no wealth in the world could buy it. Even if you had all the money on the planet, you couldn’t pay for it. This is the value that God sees in you, and also the reason why evil fights so hard to take your soul.

If everyone were aware of this, no one would live giving themselves to their own will or prioritising fleeting achievements. Many fight wars for money, success and status, but they don’t move a finger for their own soul. For any material good, you put a padlock, insurance or a password. But how have you protected what is eternal?

The greatest enemy of the soul is our own desires. There is only one antidote: the prayer of Gethsemane. To say sincerely: “not as I will, but as You will.” This prayer overcomes the inner combat and frees the soul from its own will.

Can you do it with the same truth that Jesus did?
