SPIRITUAL AMNESIA: AS IF IT NEVER HAPPENED
God never abandons us. On the other hand, human beings can easily forget what was good for them!
There is a short prayer in the book of Isaiah that reflects the situation of many people. Pay attention to these words: “We have become like those of old, over whom You never ruled, those who were never called by Your Name” (Isaiah 63:19).
In other words, the people of Israel were complaining to God about their condition of life, saying: “Look, our current state is as if the Lord had never been our God, as if we had never known You. In other words, it’s as if we were the unbelievers.”
And I kept thinking about these words and how relatable they are for many people. I speak to you, who were once in the presence of God; He was once your Lord, but today, not anymore. It’s as if you were missing that time, but those who look at your life today would never know that you once met God. You spoke to Him, sang hymns that expressed the feeling of your soul, meditated on His Word; you spoke to others about knowing your God.
I do not speak to you in any way to judge you or to relive why you got to where you are, but for you to come and pay attention to this prayer from the book of Isaiah.
But, perhaps, they forgot only one thing: it was not God who forgot them; it was they who abandoned God. And this helplessness did not happen overnight (and this serves as a warning for those who are well spiritually nowadays). The person woke up late one day and didn’t pray. Then, the next day, they didn’t pray again. But it was recorded: “I didn’t read the Bible, and I didn’t pray, but it wasn’t important to me.” One Sunday, they didn’t go to church because they went on a trip, and they thought: “So many people don’t go to church on Sundays”. Evil gives the person a feeling of well-being, so they gradually abandon the habit of conserving their faith. And, like a silent disease, the person doesn’t feel it anymore.
But, look: there’s hope for you. God reaches out to you through this word. And if you’re here, it’s because there’s hope inside you. As weak as it is, there is a desire to come back. So why don’t you take the first step? Recognise that you have moved away and overcome the feeling of shame. Wherever you are, raise your thoughts to God. Pray: “Father, warm my being, my heart. Help me to strengthen myself to return to Your ways.” Say a prayer, ask Him and take the actions you already know you have to take. You must return to the Father’s House and meditate on His Words. He promises, “Return to Me… and I will return to you” (Zechariah 1:3).
