PROFITABILITY vs VANITY: Have you seen this verse?
What God teaches us is useful, fruitful and sufficient, but what the world teaches and induces us is pure vanity, that is, unprofitable. What will your choice be?
Just look at the Sacred Text: “Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go” ( Isaiah 48:17).
God does not teach what is unprofitable. He teaches what we need for life. Everything He teaches us is for our profit. We need that. God does not waste time with futilities or vanities. And if there’s one common thing these days, it’s useless teaching.
The Word also teaches about vanity, which is highly poisonous to humans. What is ‘vanity’? If you draw a horizontal line, you can put the word “vanity” at the beginning of that line and the word “profitability” at the other end. And you will understand that “vanity” and “profitability” are opposites. “Vanity” comes from “vain” things, that is, “unprofitable”. There are people, for example, who pay attention to useless things. But “vanity” is not just that. It is everything that has no use or is of little benefit. A person may not appear vain, but perhaps that person spends the entire night playing online games. A time just to entertain them without promoting any benefit to their life. So, despite their “relaxed” appearance, they do not cease to be vain because they indulge in what is useless.
Whenever you occupy yourself with what is useless, when you worry about what doesn’t matter, you are being vain. Jesus said this to Martha. She was preoccupied with the house, with tidying up, and Jesus told her: “Martha, this is not so important now. I’m at your house.” It doesn’t mean that cleaning the house isn’t necessary. But you have to know when something is less important than something else.
God instructs about what is useful for life (concerning your health, family, work, and spiritual life). But people spend so much time on so many useless things. For example: “I want to watch the news daily to stay informed”. Who is informing you? And what is it telling you? Who says you will be informed? If you sift through everything you’ve seen, what’s left? I’m not against watching the news. But maybe you put too much importance on it and don’t read a verse that day. What is more beneficial for your life, you don’t do.
