No pleasure in your enemy's disgrace

In lament, David ripped his clothes to ribbons. All the men with him did the same. They wept and fasted the rest of the day, grieving the death of Saul and his son Jonathan, and also the army of God and the nation Israel, victims in a failed battle. 2 Samuel 1:11,12

One of the striking characteristics of a truly godly person is that he or she feels no pleasure in their enemy’s misery. David was mercilessly hunted by Saul for years. But when Saul died, David wept. There was no celebration — even though he stood to gain the throne of Israel at Saul’s death.
May God teach us to love our enemies. Hard task indeed.
