Memories - Cape Town event
The year was 1993. That’s when we arrived in Cape Town, South Africa; and the mission was to start from zero and take the Gospel to a people who had been suffering for almost 50 years under the regime of apartheid — the racial segregation imposed by the government which was made up of the white minority.
But how were we going to preach to a people who saw white people as enemies? How were we going to enter their townships (ghettos reserved for blacks) and evangelize to them? There were a lot of doubters who called us crazy and told us to go back to where we came from. After all, when we evangelized a thief stole the church’s car and shot to kill (the shot came in my direction about 5 meters from me.. Don’t ask where the bullet went, only the angel on duty knows.)
We didn’t look at the obstacles, or give ears to the negative words, but we moved forward led by faith and the desire to help those people. We got the chance to work with a couple of friends, step by step, tear by tear, until an old factory turned into our first church. It was the last building in a dead end street. It started to fill up more and more, until there was no more space… And the rest is a story for another day.
It was such a great joy to go back to Cape Town and remember those days. We were there in May, for an outdoors event, in the heart of the city; 30,000 people got together to hear the Word of God despite the cold and rain.
