LOOKING FOR A VERSE TO DO WHATEVER YOU WANT
Every human being tends to lean toward what they want, but the truth is that our desires won't always serve us well tomorrow.
Pay attention to this truth: there are two ways to read the Bible. One is to learn God’s will. The other is to justify our own will. And, unfortunately, most people lean towards the second.
Many open the Bible with a desire already formed and look for verses that confirm what they want to do. Then they say: “Do you see? God spoke to me.” But was it really the Holy Spirit – or was it just the voice of the heart wanting divine approval?
Reading the Bible like this is dangerous because it puts our will above God’s. And the truth is that we don’t know how to want. Our will is contaminated by selfishness, pride and sin. That’s why Jesus taught us to pray: “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
The human will is deceptive
If we follow the heart, we’ll end up making mistakes. Time proves it. Many times, when we do everything our way, we end up reaping regret. The Bible warns us several times against following our own will, because it usually turns against us.
And some still use verses out of context to support their own mistake. People can use isolated biblical texts to justify almost any attitude – even the worst. They have already fought wars and committed sins “in the name of God”, distorting what the Bible really says.
When a man uses the Bible to his advantage
I remember a man who came to get help from the church. He was married, but had several women. When he was instructed to change his life, he justified himself by saying, “But Solomon had a thousand women!” He read the Bible to the part that suited him – and ignored the rest.
Whoever reads the Word by half, without understanding the consequences, deceives himself. Because the same book that shows Solomon’s great deeds also shows that his many women were the cause of his ruin.
God recorded the mistakes and achievements of the heroes of faith not to cover up, but to teach the truth. David’s adultery, Abraham’s lie and Moses’ disobedience are there for us to learn from them, not for us to repeat the same mistakes.
God doesn’t contradict himself
Therefore, meditate on the Word of God, not to rely on the mistakes of the past or justify that you also have the “right” to make mistakes, but to hear what God wants to say to you today.
The Bible says that “God cannot deny himself” (2 Timothy 2:13). He doesn’t contradict himself. If an interpretation goes against the character and the whole of His Word, then it does not come from God.
So, dear friend, be careful. Don’t read the Bible to confirm what you want to hear. Read to find out what God wants from you.
Submit your will to that of God
Pray as Jesus prayed: “Father, let Your will be done and not mine.” Go to the Word with an open heart, accept the correction and let God guide you. Ask for understanding, and the Holy Spirit will show you the way.
Because the difference between those who use the Bible to deceive themselves and those who read it to obey is in an action: to submit their own will to the will of God.
