John 8: Shock therapy

Here we see one of the most heated discussions between Jesus and the religious Jews. Some of the lighter words He uses, in reference to them, are “slaves of sin,” “assassins,” “children of the devil,” “you are not of God,” “you are from beneath,” “ you will die in your sins,” and “liars.”  It’s no coincidence that by the end of the chapter they want to stone Him to death.

Why was Jesus so hard on them?

Jesus himself gave the reason why: “The truth shall set you free.” Those religious people had never heard those words. Nobody had ever had the courage to tell them what they needed to hear. They were full of themselves, convinced of their holiness because of the religiosity they practiced. They were as blind as a bat. That’s why they needed shock therapy. Either they woke up or died once in for all.

Have you ever had to face a harsh fact? Has the truth ever hurt? Was it easy to hear those words? What did you do? Did you change or attack the person who told you the truth?

People who like to lie are children of the devil. He is a master at appealing to people’s ears, making them feel at ease, all the while they’re heading to hell.

Jesus put us all in check, through these simple truths:

  • If we live in sin, we are slaves to it
  • If we do not accept Jesus, His way, we will die without forgiveness of our sins, v. 24 (attention all you religious and unbelieving people who consider Jesus merely a prophet)
  • Those who lie are children of the devil, just like all those who do what the devil like (after all, everyone is not a child of God)
  • Either you belong to God or the devil, there is no third option
  • Either you’re from above or of this world.

Get angry if you like. The truth has been said.
