Here Jesus starts to make trouble with the religious leaders for having healed a man on the Sabbath. Not because he was doing something wrong, but because the religious people were not in tune with God. That’s why: they neither understood Jesus or what He did.

In this chapter Jesus tries to explain the relationship between Him and His Father:

…God was His Father,
making Himself equal with God. John 5:18

This was a strange concept to the religious Jews. Up to this point, the only one who had tried to compare himself to God was Lucifer. “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.” (Isaiah 14:14) Lucifer, however, did it out of pride, though he had no right. While the Lord Jesus spoke the pure truth – He was really the same as the Father, to the point that He could represent Him faithfully.

There are those who say they are children of God, but they do so out of pride, tradition or ignorance. And there are those who really are children of God because they behave like their Father, just like Jesus. “Whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” (John 5:19)

Besides Jesus being the son of God, the Jews also didn’t know that He came to give this same right to those who believe in Him – to become children of God as well.  (John 1:12)

Stop and think about this for a minute. What would having God as your father imply about:

• Your life?
• Your sense of self-worth?
• Your financial needs?
• Your health? (Notice what God did for that 38 year old paralytic, who wasn’t even a son.)
• Your conduct? (Everything the Father does, the Son does too.)
• Your character?
• Your rights?
• Your authority?

Who wouldn’t appreciate the right to become a son of God? An irrational animal, a brute wouldn’t. And that’s the situation of many, they’ve been stupefied by religion and their own faulty arguments.

Yet the humble at heart and sincere are able to see and appreciate this. And that’s why they receive this power.

If you believe, you can become a child of God right now, right there.

And if you are a child of God, act like Him. And you will have all that He has.
