Irresistible or not?
You have most likely been to a lunch, a party, or another commemorative event where fantastically delicious food and drinks were served — in an abundant quantity. Where you could eat as much as you like. Your pants probably got a bit tighter than when you came in.
Now imagine this kind of luxury available to you morning, noon and night. I’m not talking about a restaurant, or a friends house, but a palace, where you live and have the best chefs in the country ready to prepare whatever you like, using the best ingredients in the world.
That was the situation that Daniel and his three friends were in. The whole story is written in the book named after him. The king had put at their disposal the same food and wine that he ate and drank. But they decided to simply eat vegetables and drink water. For some reason, they perceived that all that food cooked with wine wouldn’t be good for their health.
No, I’m not delegating a vegetarian diet here. I am focusing on the self-control Daniel and his friends displayed. The were under royal orders and subject to the temptation of their eyes, noses, mouths, and stomachs. Just the same, they abstained from what they thought could be harmful.
Self-control is a skill which is needed today more than ever. There’s an ease and abundance to everything that appeals to our appetite, from sex to shopping, entertainment, fast food, social networks, internet, music, TV etc. – the hard thing is to say “no.” It’s practically irresistible.
Daniel and his friends became healthier and stronger than those who ate the food of the king.
Your strength and health today, in every sense, also depends on your self-control. So much so, that if you fail to exercise self-control, it can result in even greater damages than your pants being tighter at the waist.
Control yourself.
