I WANT IT
Be very careful with these words: you will understand why...
Be very careful when you catch yourself saying, “I want it.” In important decisions, this expression usually marks the beginning of choices guided by pride, vanity or stubbornness, and often leads the person to harm themselves and others. These are not simple everyday choices, but decisions that affect relationships, financial and spiritual life.
When the “I want” is born of pride or grudges
Many people insist on the “I want” to prove that they are right, to reject advice or to impose themselves in a discussion. Sometimes, this will is born of a grudge: the person wants to “pay back”, show independence or feed a need for affirmation.
However, the problem is that these desires are not neutral. When the “I want” springs from the ego, it becomes a source of impulsive decisions and painful results.
The desire that sabotages decisions
Immediate desires usually deceive us. Just like the child who insists on dessert before lunch, the adult also tends to want the most pleasant and fastest, ignoring consequences. Lack of discipline creates disorganised lives, fragile relationships and destroyed finances.
Successful people learn to say “no” to themselves, while those who say “yes” to every desire usually get lost.
The biblical teaching about the will
The Bible warns that our desires can turn against us. Therefore, Jesus taught us to pray: “Not as I will, but as You will.”(Matthew 26:39)
And in the Our Father: “Let Your will be done.” (Matthew 6:10)
God does not ask us to limit ourselves, but to protect us from our own impulsiveness.
How to deal with your “I want”
When you notice in yourself the insistence on “I want”, stop and reflect:
• Is this desire born of pride?
• Of vanity?
• Of a grudge?
• Of stubbornness?
So, if there is doubt, give your will to God and ask for guidance:
“Lord, I put this desire in your hands. Show me what’s better.”
God’s will always leads to what is good, perfect, and pleasant. Ours often does not.
