FAST OF ZACHARIAS; WHAT IT IS, HOW TO DO IT (and how to change your life!)

Join us in this Fast of Zacharias, which will transform your way of thinking, speaking, and, consequently, everything around you.

Would you like to have more energy, readiness, less anxiety, and less doubt? Would you like to be a less negative person or detect negativity immediately and move away from it?

So, you need to know what the fast of Zacharias is and how to do it.

The Word of God says: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21)

The story of Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, is found in chapter 1 of the Gospel of Luke.

Zacharias was a high priest and, on a particular day, he was in the temple fulfilling his obligations when the Angel Gabriel appeared to him and said:

“Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”(Luke 1:13-17)

Faced with such a statement from the Angel, what do you imagine that Zacharias should have responded to such a blessed announcement?

In my conception, all Zacharias needed to say was: “Thank God!” “Amen, my God, thank you! I don’t deserve it, but thank God!” After all, he was a man of faith, a priest. Mary, for example, a young woman who was not a servant in the temple, just a girl, when she received Gabriel’s message that she would give birth to a child even without being married, simply said: “So be it, here I am!”

Unlike her, Zacharias questioned the angel: “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.” (Luke 1:18)

That is, he doubted and put obstacles in as if God could not fulfil His word.

“And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.” (Luke 1:19-20)

What a hard lesson. Zacharias immediately became mute and remained like this for nine months until John the Baptist was born, and he spoke again.

Therefore, the fast of Zacharias is not a food fast, nor like the fast of Daniel, which involves abstention from secular information. The fast of Zacharias consists of renouncing the lamentations, murmurs, negative words, complaints, and doubts that are common in our daily lives.

See what the Word of God says: “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.” (Proverbs 21:23)

In other words, we bring peace to our souls when we control what we say. Otherwise, we attract trouble.

Another proverb also teaches: “In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride, but the lips of the wise will preserve them.” (Proverbs 14:3)

Many destroy themselves with their own words and affect those around them. Those who constantly hear complaints end up being contaminated by this negativity, creating an environment of pessimism, anxiety, and lack of willingness. Words impact our body and emotional state. If someone asks, “How are you?” and you respond with enthusiasm, your body reflects this energy. If you respond negatively, your body also feels the weight of these words.

The Bible says in James 3:3: “Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body.” Just as the bridle controls a horse, the human being is controlled by his own mouth.

Doing the fast of Zacharias means watching over your words, being aware of what you think and say, eliminating negativity, and cultivating gratitude, faith, and energy.

So, how to do the fast of Zacharias? You don’t need to do it for nine months like Zacarias, but you can start with 21 days. I suggest you start this Sunday (2). During this period, police yourself, watch your words and thoughts and eliminate the negativity of your language. It will be 21 days without regrets.

Invite someone to do this fast with you. In this way, one can help to watch the other. If this person says something negative, say: “Zacharias, Zacharias…” and they will understand the message.

Remember: if you can’t say something positive, then be mute!
