I will talk to you about a source of weakness in your life. Perhaps, because you don’t quite understand how much it harms you, you allow yourself to surrender to this source of weakness, and your life is permanently being damaged.

The Lord Jesus revealed it to us in the “Parable of the Sower” (Matthew 13). I will focus on the second type of soil He talks about (there are four types in total). The “seed” symbolises the Word of God, and the “ground” is the human heart where the Word falls.

The second ground was stony. “Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away” (Matthew 13:5,6).

The seed may even sprout, but the rocks don’t let the plant’s roots expand. Then the plant does not grow and soon dies. This is a person marked by “emotional reactions”. For example, they hear the Word, which is the seed, and they immediately receive it with emotion (joy). “What a strong Word! It is amazing!”. But because of the lack of root, that joy is short-lived.

Let me clarify: God gave us emotions so that we may not become like robots; or indifferent to them. For example, the ability to feel leads you to care for a helpless child. But what people don’t know is that emotions weren’t given to drive our decisions. Emotions are not capable of directing our lives. This is why the advice we hear from the world is so harmful: “Follow your heart”. Some say, ‘ If I feel it, it’s because I’m on the right path. And they don’t know how absurd this behaviour is.

If you don’t watch your heart, everything around you will affect you. For example, some people even commit suicide at the time of frustration. You have to use rationality and intelligence. This is what this parable teaches. The person did not feel it, but they heard it, reasoned it out and decided to do it. You do what is right according to the Word of God.
