The world dawned with the terrible images and news of the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria last night. When we see tragedies as soon as they impact so many people at once (especially those prophesied in the Scriptures), we inevitably turn our minds to what the Lord Jesus said about the signs of the end times.

Earthquakes have always existed in the world, but the Lord Jesus, when He spoke of the signs that would precede the end, included great earthquakes in various places (Matthew 24:7).

And I believe that this earthquake in Turkey can be fitted into one of these “great earthquakes”.
It’s hard to learn about the pain of many people.

However, God does not take pleasure in anyone’s death. And some people turn against God saying: “Where was God? Why does He allow this to happen?” You can’t believe in a God who gives you the freedom to do what you want and, at the same time, wants Him to free you from the consequences of your choices. God can’t give you so much freedom and, at the moment of trouble, interfere so that the consequences do not come.

Perhaps, you ask yourself: “Why did God allow that drunk driver to kill the child?” Let’s think: for God to stop this, He has to stop that man from drinking. Soon, God would have to take away that man’s freedom. The child came into the world subject to the choices of other people. So, being born and living is a risk, because of a world with freedom. The Word of God speaks, but human beings cannot ignore the voice of God.

The Bible says that all creation groans (Romans 8:22). And we’re seeing that. The world is groaning. You see nature rebelling against man. We see endangered animals, pollution, and rivers that have no life. And that’s painful.

What hope is left for us? When the Lord Jesus told us about the signs, He gave us two important directions. The first thing is that the signs point to something. So, the more we see the signs repeating themselves, the more we have to be alert regarding what is being pointed out by these signs. And they point to the end of this world, the Great Tribulation that is about to come, the return of our Lord Jesus and the Last Judgment over all the earth. Whether you believe it or not, it doesn’t matter. If you have sense, you will at least consider it. And the second direction is: to take care of your soul. Because, without warning, people died in this earthquake. One thing is certain: we will all leave this place and when this body goes to the grave where will the soul go?
