Behind all things that are evil

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:10

Think about the words above for a moment. Everything which is evil comes from the love of money. It’s a confirmation and so much more. Was the apostle Paul exaggerating, or was he speaking the truth?

I believe a brief analysis of evil in this world will show us that he was not exaggerating. The love of money really brings about all kinds of evil things.  (Note, he didn’t say money is the root of all evil, but to love money is the root of all evil. Money is good and everyone likes it. The more the merrier. The problem is when people start to want it more than anything else in life.)

For money, people lie, steal, kill, have sex, sell their soul, compromise their integrity, cheat, create schemes, neglect their family, ruin their health, die young, lose friends, make enemies, leave the church, criticize the pastor, become pastors, create debts, become so busy they can’t spend time with their kids, rush into marriage, divorce, commit fraud, steal from their boss, take advantage of their employees, make promises to their voters which are never fulfilled…

And that’s not even the half of it. Just watch today’s news. How many times can you connect a crime to loving money as the root of the problem?

Obviously, there is no point to lament over people’s mistakes or point fingers. The only advantage of having the understanding of these things is to apply what you learned. Has the love of money brought evil to your life? How many problems have you faced which could be linked to a strong desire for money or material things?

According to Paul, many turned away from the faith for this reason. This slip up has caused a lot of pain. It is impossible to live without money. It touches every area of our lives. That’s why it becomes essential not to let it dominate, lead, or enchant you.

Now take two minutes to think about a pain that loving money has caused you (or will cause you, if you don’t change.)  Decide what you will do in regards to it. Unless you’re too busy to “spend” some time…

One small detail, if you’re reading this during work hours, don’t use up your boss’ time to do it, time which you are being payed for. Create a reminder for yourself and do it when you are off work.
