WELL-BEING vs. BEING WELL

When we seek only well-being, we are often led to ill-being. Reorganise your life and priorities, and enjoy the trust the Word of God offers us.

You must understand the difference between well-being and being well with God, because every human being, naturally, seeks to be comfortable, well-fed, living well, and dressing well.

However, the Word of God teaches us that the search for well-being is useless and usually leads to ill-being. This is because the search for well-being generates anxiety, vanity, concerns, and restlessness.

Jesus spoke about walking with anxiety in the Sermon on the Mount, which basically gives us a manual for life.

“Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?” Matthew 6:27

There are things we can’t change, no matter how much we take care of them or how much we try. We have to accept these things as they are and trust that God will do what we can’t do. And even the things we can change, He said:

“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?” Matthew 6:28-30

This search makes the person lose faith, it is based on the material, what we can touch, and what we can see, and we begin to rely only on fleeting and vain things, bringing many problems and afflictions to the soul. He concludes by saying:

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.” Matthew 6:31,32

Gentiles are people who don’t know God. They attribute happiness to material achievements and seek them in vain. In their search for well-being, they find discomfort, frustration, and emptiness.

Jesus said the solution is: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:33,34.

Don’t fool yourself. Don’t match wealth and money with God’s blessing. God can bless financially, but the fact that the person has money does not mean that they have God’s blessing. Don’t confuse well-being with being well with God.

So, if you seek to be well with God, He will take care of your well-being. Therefore, first, seek to please God; He is your heavenly Father; He knows what you need, He knows your struggles, He knows everything and will take care of you.
