THE WORST ADVICE, BUT YOU HEAR IT EVERYWHERE
Are you being ruled by your feelings?
I learnt something essential: faith is not feeling, it is deciding who rules within me. And this begins with a direct question: who has ruled your heart?
The Scriptures alert
When meditating on Psalm 78, we find a powerful warning. The psalmist recalls the history of the people of Israel in the desert – a generation that saw extraordinary miracles, but still failed.
They witnessed the sea open, were supported daily, and, even so, did not reach the Promised Land. Why?
Because they didn’t rule their hearts.
Instead, they became a stubborn, unfaithful generation.
When the heart takes control
Now, think with me: what happens when a person lets their heart rule?
First, they start living for immediate appetites. Then, they quickly forget the deliverances they have already received. In addition, they start complaining about everything. Nothing is good.
That’s exactly what happened to those people:
- They forgot the miracles;
- They murmured constantly;
- They spoke against God;
- And, finally, they became unfaithful.
The murmuring, by the way, was not just a habit – it was a poison. And many still don’t realise how much it destroys inside.
The deception of “following the heart”
Nowadays, the world repeats a dangerous piece of advice: “follow your heart”.
But I need to be clear: this is one of the worst pieces of advice someone can follow.
The heart feels, but does not know how to decide. It is impulsive, unstable, and often inconsequential.
Following the heart, in practice, is like giving the steering wheel of your life to someone without direction. The result? Disaster.
How to rule the heart in practice
On the other hand, there is a safe way. And it demands a decision.
1. Not everything you feel needs to turn into action
First of all, understand: you don’t control what you feel, but you control what you do with what you feel.
You may feel anger – but you can choose not to feed it.
You can feel a passion – but you can decide not to follow it.
In other words, feeling is not sinning; acting without thinking is.
2. Stop and think before acting
Then use reason. God didn’t just give us emotions – He gave us intelligence.
Therefore, before acting, stop and reflect:
“What should I do with this feeling?”
When you think, you take control. And when you take control, you stop being a slave to emotions.
3. Submit your mind to God
Finally, here is the key: give your mind to God’s direction.
When the mind is guided by the divine will, it begins to govern the heart safely. This is how the Kingdom of God is established within us – when He reigns over our mind.
And then a perfect order happens:
God rules the mind
The mind rules the heart
And the heart stops causing destruction
The decision that defines your destiny
That generation in the desert did not fall for lack of miracles – it fell for lack of inner government.
That’s why, today, the same risk exists. If you don’t rule your heart, it will rule you.
And the question remains: who is in control of your life now?
If you want to stand firm and reach your “promised land”, then decide: rule your heart and remain faithful to God.
After that, it is worth doing what was instructed: meditate calmly on Psalm 78 and apply each teaching in your daily life.
