STOP THE EARTH, I WANT TO GET OFF

Every human being, naturally, has within themselves a sense of justice. But have you ever stopped to think about where this comes from?

Every human being has a sense of justice, a sense of right and wrong. Yes, we’ve all been born with it. Something inside us says that certain things are right and others are wrong without anyone having to teach us. You don’t have to be a Christian to know, for example, that it is wrong to mistreat a child, an animal or an older person. Nor to assume that stealing is wrong. These laws are naturally written on the tablets of our hearts.

But where does that come from? This sense of justice comes from God because He is just; He is justice itself. Human beings carry within themselves this sense because they were created in the image and likeness of God. We can all perceive and feel the injustices of the world. You have often heard news about atrocities, tragedies, and calamities and thought: ‘My God, when will this end?’. Sometimes, we feel like saying: ‘Stop the Earth, I want to get off!’. This sense of justice within us cries out for correcting the wrong things.

But, at the same time, we need to understand that if this sense exists, first, it has a source – and that source is God, Justice itself. Secondly, if we really received God’s justice in this life, we would also receive our due punishments. It is not only for the worst people in this world because it is written that there is not even one who might be just. Therefore, if we all face God’s judgment, we will reap wrath for ourselves.

The apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, spoke about this in the book of Romans:

“But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honour, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness — indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek” (Romans 2:5-9).

That is, there will be the day of the manifestation of God’s judgment. So, that desire, we all feel that, in the end, things will be corrected; that day will come; you can be sure of that! The day of God’s Last Judgment is already determined. Then, this hunger and thirst for righteousness within us will be satiated.

But there will be two results: for those who persevered in doing good, it will be eternal life, and for those who insisted on doing evil, it will be indignation, wrath, judgment and eternal death because that’s what they chose.

Now, understand that the Text does not mean that, to enter heaven, you need to practice good works. The good works that will be rewarded are not those that start from us but from our faith in Him. Whoever is saved does good, but not all who do good are saved because we will not be saved by the works we do; otherwise, Jesus would not need to die on the cross. Thus, by faith in Him, we have an Advocate before the Judge, and He will defend us by the faith we demonstrate in Him.

Those who appear before the throne of the Just Judge without a Lawyer, having surrendered to the injustices of this world, will receive the wrath accumulated for them in this Last Judgment. But those who believed in the Lord Jesus and lived their lives seeking to practice good because they believed in Him will receive eternal life.

Which side will you be on?
