Our will itself is one of the greatest powers that God has given to the human being. Since birth, it has already manifested itself. The baby’s cry, for example, is the first expression of will: they react to discomfort and seek what seems safe to them.

Throughout life, we continue to exercise this power. We say what we want, choose paths, and make decisions. And God, although He is Almighty, respects our freedom of choice.

The human dilemma

Many people ask: “Where is God in the face of suffering?” But, at the same time, they rarely ask what His will is before deciding on something important.

We want God to intervene in the consequences, but we do not always accept His direction in the choices. Therefore, Jesus taught to pray: “Let Your will be done.”

This prayer shows that for God’s will to be done in our lives, we need to give up our own.

A prayer that few say

In Psalm 143, the psalmist says:

“Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God.”

This is a powerful prayer because it recognises that God knows more than we do. His will is good, perfect and pleasant, but we often resist it because we want to follow our own desires.

This is how many people get into wrong relationships, make hasty decisions or get involved in misleading proposals without seeking God’s direction.

The way to experience the best of God

Instead of coming before God only with requests, we need to learn to say: “Teach me to do Your will.”

When we put our will on the Altar and allow God to lead us, we avoid unnecessary pain and experience the best He has prepared for us.
