SEVEN SYMPTOMS OF SPIRITUAL COMPLACENCY (Part 1)

When the sense of being well becomes an invisible danger.

Faith is something we all need to watch daily. And that’s exactly why I want to talk to you about a subject that resonates with you and me alike, and one that reaches us all: spiritual complacency.

At first glance, complacency seems something simple, even harmless. However, when it settles in spiritual life, it acts in a subtle, silent and extremely dangerous way. Unlike physical complacency – easy to identify – the spiritual usually goes unnoticed, precisely because it does not cause immediate pain.

Complacency that anaesthetises the body, mind and faith

The human body, by nature, seeks comfort. Just sit in a chair: we start upright, but as time goes by, the body relaxes, moulds to the seat and seeks the most comfortable position possible. The mind works the same way. It prefers easy, fast stimuli that do not require effort – like scrolling the mobile phone screen indefinitely, consuming content that entertains, but does not challenge.

In the same way, the spiritual side can also accommodate itself. And that’s where the problem begins. When there is no surveillance, faith ceases to be practice and becomes just a sensation. Therefore, I want to highlight some clear signs of this process.

1. The feeling of well-being that leads to the abandonment of faith

The first symptom of spiritual complacency is the false sense that everything is fine. And it is important to emphasise: it is a feeling, not a reality. Just as there are silent diseases that develop without showing symptoms, spiritual comfort can make a person believe they are spiritually healthy when, in fact, they are weakened.

This impression of well-being leads, little by little, to a reduction in the practice of faith. The person begins to measure their spiritual life by what they feel rather than by what they live. They start thinking: “How much less can I pray without missing it?”, “How much less can I read the Bible without realising it?” Thus, faith is being left aside.

The Bible is clear that the illusion of security can lead to perdition. Spiritual complacency kills slowly, without warning.

2. Prayer is limited to hours of crisis

Then the second symptom arises: the person stops praying or prays only at critical moments. When everything goes well, the prayer disappears. But, in the face of pain, fear or affliction, the cry out arises immediately. This is common. After all, even those who say they don’t believe in God pray when they face an extreme situation.

However, those who maintain an active faith do not communicate with God only in crises. Now, when you wake up, when you go to bed, when you make decisions. They live in constant communion because they understand that God is not an emergency resource, but a daily presence.

When spiritual complacency sets in, this continuous relationship is disrupted, and prayer ceases to be part of the routine.

3. Reading the Bible becomes rare, shallow and rushed

The third symptom is negligence with the Word of God. The Bible is rarely read. When it is opened, the reading is superficial, made only to fulfil an obligation. There is no meditation, no search for direction.

At this stage, many prefer to hear third parties discuss the Bible rather than go directly to the Word. They transfer their spiritual responsibility and outsource faith. However, the relationship between you and God is non-transferable. Messages, preaching and prayers from others are important, but they never replace personal contact with God.

When this happens, faith leans on unnecessary assistance and inevitably settles down.

A necessary alert

These are just the first three symptoms of spiritual complacency:

a sense of well-being that leads to the reduction of faith practices;
Prayer is restricted to moments of crisis;
And the rare, shallow and rushed Bible reading.

In this video, you will understand why the most dangerous moment is not the crisis, but the success. Watch until the end and evaluate if you are on alert or just comfortable.

Tomorrow there is the continuation of this theme. Don’t miss it.
